Shams Kabir says: Jawahar Lal and Indira did not have the grace to ensure that they were not made recipients of the Bharat Ratna while incumbent. Though in Nehrus case it can be overlooked because the Ratna could be construed to have been awarded for his work in the freedom struggle. In any case, he does not need any awards for validation of the greatness of his contributions. Vajpayee had the grace to ensure that he is not given the award. Talk had come up and he nipped it in the bud. Whether he is deserving or not is for you to decide. The fact is that more or less 60% of the Ratnas have been awarded to people connected to politics. That the awards are political in nature was ensured by the Congress. BJP is bearing the torch now. Are we to assume that the only great people in India, the gems, are in the political arena? Sort of highlights how the colonials departed but left behind a new set of rulers who would pat themselves on their backs and proclaim, job well done and call bringing it governance. While the people feel none the better for it. The Bharat Ratnas have been reduced to a farce, a long established one.
