Sharing a review from a fan that is on Amazon! Arnold is also an author of childrens books...We appreciate his input. Learn to Love Reading By Arnold Haber Format: Paperback I must admit that this book treats the 2 great passions of my life, greyhounds and children learning to love reading, with the respect and attention they deserve. Judy Bee, author and Anna Kecskes, illustrator again combine to continue the story of the Reading Education Assistance Dogs (R.E.A.D.) program as supported by The Kennel Club and the Bark and Read Foundation. The goal is to halt the decline in child literacy through training dogs and sending them into schools and libraries to hear children read. Why? Why, to help children learn to love reading! Reading out loud can be a bit difficult sometimes. But with a trained listening non-judgmental dog friend nearby enjoying being as close as a good friend can be, the whole event becomes fun and a sweet spot in the childs memory bank. Tony Nevett is Dannys trainer and partner and their credentials and achievements are well documented. The book does contain references and citations galore explaining the program and its purposes. The book is neat in that the story is actually a series of events which establishes the young reader as an active participant in the narrative. Danny is the medium where the young reader is introduced to Dannys experiences during his trip to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, U.S.A. on a visit to meet the dogs involved in work similar to Dannys. How cool is that? Way cool!! Danny (and the reader) meet the dogs and staff at Corridor Therapy Dogs and dogs being dogs, we all get involved in sampling different meals, seeing different sights while learning how American expressions are just a bit different from those in England although we share the same English spoken hither, thither and yon across the pond. Okay, so Danny travels from England to the U.S. and he meets the dogs from Corridor abd the reader is introduced to Major Rascal, Princess Stella, Sir Sonny and Jesse Junior. They all become friends, especially Jesse Junior. He and Danny hook up and hang out and wander around Cedar Rapids and eventually find themselves in a ballpark after Danny misreads a sign. Thinking hes headed for kennels cause he knows what kennels are, hes really headed for the home field of the Cedar Rapids Kernels. Naturally, Jesse Junior knows exactly whats going down but, hey, thats what stories are for. There are a few surprising turns but the situation gets resolved with the home team players and management hosting the dogs and staff of Corridor to Very Important Persons (VIP) status at Cedar Rapids Baseball Stadium. As a souvenir, Danny is presented with a Kernels baseball cap (which he loves) to be worn only when hes not being a reading dog. Danny Strikes Out In America is printed with the young reader in mind and the illustrations are colorful, plentiful and thematically in tune with the real-life characters of the story. The edition is a wealth of information about the R.E.A.D. program, Dannys work as a canine reading therapy dog, the demonstration that regardless of where, the need is widespread and the goals of all the various programs are the same. Its all about the kids and the development and support for the love of reading. I give this book a Five Star Rating. Baseball and dogs and food and fun and treats and friends and love and respect--all key words for this portion of the Danny series. I Loved It!!!! And could you tell? I love Danny
