She could be the next lady city mayor – twenty years from now, and she could say that she’s done it before through the Little Mayor (Role Play) Child Participation in Decision Making in celebration of the National Children’s Month. Xyries Angela C. Lamadrid, 10 years old and a 4th grade pupil from Catbalogan I Central Elementary School, was the first to assume the post of Little Mayor. Her half day term started last October 9, 2014 at 1:00 in the afternoon. As the Little Mayor, she was able to join City Mayor Stephany Uy-Tan and observe how she dealt with the city’s various concerns. She also accompanied the mayor in her engagements outside the office. All in all, she was given a clear picture as to the true responsibilities and demands that come with holding the city’s highest government post. Setting a good example is very important to Xyries. As the reigning “Lakambini ng Kalikasan”, she said that environmental challenges can be minimized by showing to family and friends the proper way of throwing garbage in the right trash can. “I believe in the saying that everything is possible if we start within ourselves first”, she said. A consistent honor student, Xyries also likes to engage in extra-curricular activities like joining the Supreme Student Council and campus publication as well as competing in various contests in her school. She was chosen through a letter she sent to the Mayor’s Office where she wrote that to be selected as little mayor will help develop her self confidence. “I know that I am still a child but age is not a hindrance in achieving your goals. Open to pupils in the 1st to 4th grade level, the Little Mayor (Role Play) Child Participation in Decision Making aims to encourage children to be active participants in the city’s civic affairs by giving them a glimpse into the true workings of local governance. Interested pupils are to write a letter to the mayor expressing their desire to sit as little mayors and their reasons for doing so. The next little mayor shall assume office on October 16, 2014.
