She was a fourth-grader who stopped showing up at her South Side school in 2010. She lived with relatives in a dirty, unkempt house. She became pregnant. In fourth grade. The Tribune uncovered her horrific story while researching truancy rates at Chicago Public Schools. The startling 2012 Tribune investigation, Empty Desk Epidemic by David Jackson, Gary Marx and Alex Richards, found that roughly 32,000 CPS elementary students - 1 in 8 - missed at least a month of classes during the 2010-11 school year. Thousands more simply vanished from attendance rolls. The investigation led to the creation of a task force that last week released its recommendations.
