Shekarau reiterates FG’s commitment to entrepreneurship development The Minister of Education, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, said on Wednesday that the Federal Government had shown sincere commitment to entrepreneurship development for national growth. Shekarau made this known at the opening of the Stakeholders Sensitisation Forum for the Annual National Entrepreneurship Week (ANEW) in Abuja. Represented by Prof. Julius Okojie, Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), Shekarau said in spite of government efforts, the country still lacked institutionalised approach to entrepreneurship development. He said government was conscious of the fact that if global best practices must be adapted in Nigeria, entrepreneurship development must be institutionalised. ``Thus entrepreneurship development needs to be introduced throughout the schools and training systems and the role of the universities is critical,’’ he said. Against this backdrop, the Federal Government in 2006 issued a presidential directive through the Federal Ministry of Education. It made Entrepreneurship Education compulsory for all students of tertiary institutions with effect from the 2007/2008 academic session. Shekarau commended the NUC on its achievements of ensuring compliance of the directive by all universities. In his address, Okojie said the aim of entrepreneurship education was to avail students the opportunity to develop entrepreneurship skills from their core course of study. He said the NUC was optimistic about the success of the project since entrepreneurship education had been made compulsory in all universities. Also, Dr Sola Aliu, Principal Consultant of ANEW, said it had become clear that youths must direct their lives through the acquisition of entrepreneurship skills. Aliu, ANEW Chief Executive Officer, said government on the other hand must encourage such developments as great economies of the world were driven by Small and Medium Enterprises. He said educational institutions must not only concentrate on imparting knowledge to students, but ensure skills creation and generation of value systems
