The investigation follows complaints that leaders at the shelter unnecessarily sent dogs to their deaths, then covered their tracks. The Franklin County Dog Shelter and Adoption Center exists to rescue animals, but from the inside, volunteers are now telling a different story – one that animal rescue groups are validating. Allegations are that people who were about to adopt dogs from the center came back to find the same dogs were already euthanized. Were seeing dogs being mistakenly euthanized. Were seeing the vet threaten and intimidate dogs in order to fail them. Were also seeing the vet run medical tests so that he can fail dogs. Were just seeing the opposite of compassion, said Elizabeth Lessner, a animal rescue volunteer. The animal rescue groups also question the records at the shelter, saying they dont show what was really going on with the animals, and how many were really euthanized. NBC4 reached out to the director and head veterinarian at the shelter. Neither have responded to the allegations at this point. The Franklin County Commissioners have launched an investigation into the allegations.
