Shining (Ice) Shining (Ice) I have vivid memories of coming home - TopicsExpress

Shining (Ice) Shining (Ice) I have vivid memories of coming home from my Catholic elementary school, changing out of my navy and white uniform, and running straight to the couch to turn on the TV to watch Rap City on BET every weekday at 4 pm. I was likely no older than 9 years old when this routine began. The “ice” or jewels that are central to so many songs and music videos by artists I looked up to represent a fleeting obsession. It is a seemingly superficial obsession that ties into the desperate need for an essential part of life: a reliable source of sustenance, i.e. money. This obsession, born out of experiencing life in impoverished communities that struggle without this sustenance is understood when analyzing why it pervades the music of rappers, but it eludes clear explanation when it is ingrained in the mind of a suburban Catholic-educated child’s mind, or the rest of society that knows little to none about this experience. This piece includes elements I have borrowed from more recent eras of southern rap and hip-hop culture–from the bling to the chopped and screwed imagery–remixed to serve as a way to explain away this obsession within myself, as an outsider of the culture that holds a different relation to these objects. _______ FOLLOW LIPSapp Turnt Up!
