Shipboard Training Program FAQs Consistent with its aim of quality excellence, the CU-CME and The Shipboard Training office continuously seeks to improve its curricular programs to meet international standards. Inherent in the curricula for BSMT and BSMarE is the one year Shipboard or Cadetship Training which is equivalent to forty (40) credit units. This requirement which is a pre-requisite for the completion of the BSMT and BSMarE courses, is undertaken aboard a merchant marine vessel of not less than 500 gross tonnage for Deck Cadets and 750 KW for Engine Cadets, and is monitored by the CU-CME Shipboard Training Officer in cooperation with the shipping company’s counterpart. What is Shipboard Training? Shipboard Training is the one year practicum component of the four-year BSMT/BSMarE course, which must be completed if the cadet is to acquire a BSMT or a BSMarE degree. Generally it is undertaken if the cadet has completed the three year academic requirement. Who are qualified to undergo shipboard training of the CU-CME? BSMT/BSMarE Cadets who have finished the three year academic component of the 4-year BSMT or a BSMarE program. For how long must a cadet undergo shipboard training? The minimum period of Shipboard Training required by CHED is 12 months or 1 year; 6 months of which must be spent on supervised Bridge Watchkeeping Duties for Deck Cadets and Engine Watchkeeping for Engine Cadets; or for BSMT cadet students, refers to an approved seagoing service not less than 36 months which involves the performance of bridge watchkeeping duties in a position other than a cadet a cadet or apprentice (eg. able seafarer, ordinary seaman, quarter-master, boatswain) under the supervision of the master or a qualified officer for a period of not less than six (6) months; or for BSMarE cadet students, refers to a combined workshop skill training and an approved seagoing service not less than 36 months of which not less than 30 months will be seagoing service in the engine department, which involves the performance of engine-room watchkeeping duties in a position other than a cadet or apprentice (eg. able seafarer, engine, wiper, oiler, motorman, pumpman) under the supervision of the chief engineer officer or a qualified engineer officer for a period of not less than six (6) months. This would be documented through the service record issued by the shipping/manning company to the student concerned. Should the minimum period of twelve months or one (1) year of Shipboard Training be continuous? As a general rule, for practical considerations, it should be continuous as much as possible. However, it may be done in two (2) installments of six (6) months; each six-month installment should be continuous or in any other combination, provided the total period onboard is not less than one year. Should the one (1) year Shipboard Training be done in only one (1) vessel? Not necessarily. A cadet may be transferred from one vessel to another within one (1) year period, provided that the vessel one is boarding is not less than 500 gross tons for deck cadets and not less than 750 kw propulsive power for Engine Cadets. In what vessels may the Shipboard Training be undertaken? Shipboard Training may be undertaken in any commercial vessel as defined by RA 8544, domestic or foreign, as long as such vessel is NOT LESS THAN 500 GROSS TONS for Deck Cadets or NOT LESS THAN 750 KW for Engine Cadets. What will happen if a cadet undertakes one’s Shipboard Training in a vessel other than a commercial vessel as defined by law or has a Gross Tonnage of Engine KW less than that prescribed? One’s Shipboard Training will not be credited no matter how long one stays on board. His or Her service may be a good learning experience, but it will not be credited towards the one year Shipboard Training requirement. The cadet therefore, despite one’s shipboard experience, cannot obtain a BSMT or a BSMarE degree. What are the specific requirements for Shipboard Training? To be eligible for Shipboard Training, the CU-CME cadet must: Have a completed the three academic years of the BSMT/BSMarE Program Have qualified and have been accepted in the Cadetship Program of Shipping/Manning Company Have undergone briefing and orientation conducted by the Shipboard Training Officer (STO) What are the documentary requirements for Shipboard Training? The first group is called Basic Documentary Requirements and consists of the following: Certificate of Academic Requirements(CAR) Transcript of Records(TOR) Certification/Authentication and Verification from CHED(CAV) Basic Safety Training Certificates from AccreditedTrainingCenter(SOLAS) Seaman’s Identification and Record Book(SIRB) The second and final sets of documents are the following: Contract of Employment with the Shipping/Manning Company Particulars of the ship boarded on or will be boarding Contact address of the Shipping /Manning Company And an accomplished copy of the CU-QMS-STO-12 available from the STO How does a CU-CME cadet qualify in the Cadetship Program of Shipping/Manning Companies? The CU-CME cadet must take and pass the qualifying examinations and interviews of the Shipping/Manning Companies/Agencies including medical, psychological, drug and eyesight examination tests. When does a CU-CME cadet considered graduate from the BSMT / BSMarE Program? A cadet is considered a graduate of the BSMT / BSMarE Course the moment one complies with all the requirements of the shipboard Training Program, as certified by the Superintendent/Dean and is declared by college registrar as having fully complied with all the academic requirement of the course. What are the benefits acquired by the CU-CME cadet as a result of his BSMT/BSMarE Graduation? The Cadet is entitled to: Diploma One may qualify to take the PRC licensure examination for OIC Deck/Engine License Officers/Engineers Who is in charge of the Shipboard Training Program in the CU-CME?
