ShopKat Yarn Bowl As most of you know, I turn bowls. Upon occasion I make yarn bowls, which is a heavy bowl with a stable base and a hole in the side. You put a ball of yarn into the bowl, pass the tag end through the hole, and do your thing with the knitting needles and crochet hooks. Mittens, hats, socks, sweaters, afghans, and such result. The bowl keeps the ball of yarn from rolling away. Now, often that hole in the side is connected to the rim with a J-shaped slot, so that yarn can be hooked into it without having to have the working end handy. That J-shape made me think of my ShopKat logo and Ive been kicking around various ideas on how I might make that design work. This is the prototype. The bowl is birch heartwood, hard as a rock and heavy. The base is wide and very stable, the rim tilts slightly inward (though you cant tell from the picture) to help keep the yarn ball contained. The yarn keeper is oak. In the future Ill likely make the keepers in various exotic hardwoods that accent whatever wood the bowl is made from. Its about seven and half inches in diameter.
