~Shopping List~ Before & After Getting Your Puppy...by Ian Dunbar. Great read....lots of wonderful tips for early puppy training. A Veterinarian Team....they will become like family. So important to find one you trust and respect and stick with that clinic. Dont continue to shop around or look for the cheapest. A good Vet team will get to know you and your puppy and will be with you for all stages of their life. You will need to book 2 appointments after bringing your puppy home for further immunizations. Then for spay or neutering....and then once a year for check up and year vaccinations and de-worming. This is key...find a Vet team prior to bringing the puppy home. Large breed crate...wire or enclosed plastic its a matter of preference. We use both around here. Puppies are crate trained in the wire. Enclosed plastic are great for travel. Doggie Cushion...Costco has the very best ones. Great price and easy to take the outer cover off and they wash up nicely. Furminator dog brush...looks more like a fine tooth comb. The very best brush for Labs. Metal dog dishes. They wont break and are the best for sanitizing. Large Kong...and a selection of treats to fill it. Chuck it...and rubber balls to go with. Dont get the tennis balls. A good quality leash. Puppy will come home with a collar but you will go through at least one more sizing before puppy reaches a stage where you are set. Dont get an expensive one now...wait until puppy is full grown and then get a nice one to match the leash. Toys...chew toys...anything that catches your eye. If you are using your puppy for hunting later...absolutely no tug-of-war toys. Special liver treats for potty training...and only potty training. Find a spot in your back yard for potty and prepare it for easy clean up. Puppy should always be taken to this spot for relieving themselves. Then rewarded with this special liver treat and praised...praised....praised. I will give everyone a gift bag when puppy goes home. A fleece blanket that smells like their mom and litter mates. Treats and dog food sample bags. Their favorite toy from grandma. The collar they are wearing. 6 week free puppy insurance. Coupons from the dog food company. Puppies must be on Large Breed Puppy food until they are 18 months old. Their growth plates dont close until between 18 months and 2 years old. Diet is huge for a puppies over all health and through out their life. Never buy brands from your local store. Pets stores, Veterinarians ...you will pay a bit more at the time but you will save in costs in the long run as you dont need to feed as much. And...the over all health of your puppy will be better with good quality food. If you are hunting check with your local outfitting company for tiny bumpers etc for getting them started right away. When in doubt about anything concerning your puppy...dont google it...always consult your Veterinarian first. Dont worry about spending a fortune on toys...a good Kong, Chuck it...and you. And really YOU and a leash are their greatest toys. ;) And treats...the puppies will be started on raw carrots, apples and plain popcorn for treats. And...if you have followed us before Cheezies is grandpas favorite snack and he gives the puppies Cheezies. They each will go home with a bag. That is all i can think of for now. Any questions just ask here. xxx
