Shortly before he passed away in August last year, the late great Seamus Heaney was working on the ‘Five Fables’ project for BBC NI, translating into modern English the medieval Scots fables written 500 years ago by Robert Henryson. Seamus translations were being recorded by narrator Billy Connolly, with a specially-composed score by Barry Douglas. The first of these five programmes can be heard today at 2.03pm on BBC Radio Ulster just before Lynette Fay. It centres around two sister mice and the lure of the city, which for the urban mouse seems to be superior to the rough existence of her country sister. But as she finds out to her cost, the city is not without its dangers. The fable has been animated by Flickerpix Productions and can be seen later this afternoon at 4.45pm on BBC Northern Ireland (BBC One).
