Should responsible citizens who install solar panels and opt into sustainable energy be subject to a sun tax? Stan Holmes found that solar panels greatly reduced his utility bills, even though: The idea was to do everything we could to reduce our carbon footprint. Rocky Mountain Power customers who net meter - become both energy producers and consumers. They earn extra credit for the excess power their solar panels produce and that surplus goes into the grid to power their neighborhood. Its clearly a win win situation for everybody. However, a net metering fee and current debate on future fee based tariffs have been met with concern by environmental groups, who believe these fees will inhibit the market for energy from renewable resources. Casey Roberts, an attorney for the Sierra Clubs Beyond Coal campaign says: “There is a tremendous urgency to reduce carbon emissions. Distributed solar energy is the main growth area for renewable energy. To strangle it in the crib would be doing a tremendous disservice to the people in Utah and around the country,” The neat part of sustainable and renewable solar energy is that we all can take part in producing it. But where do the fees come in? As the sun is a natural resource - how are energy companies going to maximize profit? This raises important issues about how citizens, energy corporations and the sun will transform our energy model and the business of providing it.
