Should the Mariner Hill be designated for heavy trucks? At our - TopicsExpress

Should the Mariner Hill be designated for heavy trucks? At our last City Council meeting, despite our City Engineer’s recommendation against it, a motion was made and passed that makes Mariner north of Como Lake down to Barnet, as well as Como Lake from Mariner to North Road, a Truck Route. Its on a trial basis, but might be made permanent after the end of September. I opposed that motion, but it passed 6-3 (with Councillors Asmundson and ONeill also opposed). That stretch of Mariner is the most dangerous arterial route in our city, with a grade up to 11% (most truck routes max out at 8%), very sharp curves, no center barrier, sidewalks both sides, bus stops along the route, a school and a park, blind driveways, a traffic light at the bottom, and absolutely no margin for error. This wasn’t designed as a truck route, yet the decision allows trucks -- semis, gravel dump trucks (with trailer), fully-loaded concrete trucks, etc., the right to use Como Lake and Mariner to drive through Coquitlam. I also opposed it because we hadn’t consulted with the residents who would be affected. Weve heard from some of the public so far, and hopefully more will weigh in so that Council will reconsider that decision. Thoughts?
