**Show a heart to help Ben** But the actions of the Federal Department of Health to reject funding for Ben Calandra to travel to America for treatment that could cure his dreadful disease was mean-spirited and overly bureaucratic. The Americans will cover all surgical costs and medicines, and provide a small living allowance for Ben and his mum Ruth, as the pair will need to remain in the US for about seven months. The Calandras - truckie dad Robert, Ruth, Ben and Jessica, 10, are a decent, hardworking family with no spare cash. They need help to fly Ruth and Ben to America, and money to cover basic costs of living, such as groceries. Hopefully there might be enough money for Jessica and Robert to fly over during those long, difficult months. But the Australian Government on November 15 rejected Bens application for funding because his treatment is deemed to be at the clinical trial stage.
