Shrine of Forgotten Objects As an outsider to Taiwanese culture - TopicsExpress

Shrine of Forgotten Objects As an outsider to Taiwanese culture there are a few things that I always note when exploring this island. The mass amounts of beautiful structures that have been abandoned, and the objects that inhabit these spaces. This piece explores that idea of honouring objects that had once served an important purpose to Taiwanese lives. Most of the objects within the installation have been found at the Liuzhangli Cemetery from abandoned graves. Many Chinese, holding true to their tradition, uprooted the graves of relatives here in Taiwan to bring them back their ancestors in Mainland China. What is left are broken pots, and remnants of shrines. Ironically, these objects that hold an important purpose in Chinese tradition are left and forgotten. The calligraphy scrolls were found in an old abandoned temple in Jhubei, Hsinchu. These calligraphy scripts were from a rich family from Mainland China, who seemingly have a lot of clout in Taiwan. They are believed to be quite old, as Chinese characters do not make sense to many Taiwanese speakers, it maybe possibly linked to their family motto. The only thing known is that the calligraphy is related to honouring their ancestors. Lastly the box housing the objects was intricately carved to mimic many of the patterns found in abandoned buildings that I have documented. The box replicates both a display case for forgotten objects as well as a a shrine to honour them. https://youtube/watch?v=8TL0cPQoLvY
