Sigh.....I started my day early with a hit-by-car cat. It died before I arrived but it had a microchip so I had the sad task of going to the home and informing the devastated owner. I felt the heaviness in my heart the rest of the day. I slammed through endless calls all day long until my regular shift ended at 5:30 and the sheriffs dept continued the trend calling all evening with on-call emergencies. This latest is an old dog, bleeding, dirty, long nails, huge mass on her abdomen and scared to death. She showed up on someones deck in the dark and was hiding behind the BBQ when I arrived. I called softly to her and heard the sound of her tail beating tentatively against the wall. I coaxed her out and shes now been fed, watered and is resting on a cushy blanket with a warm coat on. Its possible that she was disoriented and wandered off, that she has a caring owner who doesnt have the resources or knowledge to take better care of her in her old age. Its more likely that someone pushed her out of the car out in the country because they couldnt or wouldnt do the right thing.
