Sigh...So, Jamelle Bouie and I taped a really great segment for CNNs Reliable Sources on Friday, discussing Donald Sterling, Cliven Bundy, and how media salivates over blatant racism stories while ignoring the bigger issue of systemic racial inequity (including Sterlings history of housing discrimination against tenants of color); but today, when it was supposed to air, I learn that theyve pulled the segment. The producer, who was none too happy about it, says she thinks its because they had to give priority to the White House Correspondents Dinner. In other words, the President telling jokes -- some of them about racism -- is more important than a conversation actually about racism. THIS is the problem with the media (a subject about which, ironically, Reliable Sources was created to address): namely, they focus on fluff (albeit humorous and perhaps interesting at times) over substance.
