Sightseeing in Berlin, last full day in Europe. The cognitive dissonance of great beauty, antiquity, the turmoil or war and the bloodstains of hate. Visited the DDR Museum for a chilling look at the communist vision for East Berlin after WWII. Cheap housing built with banned materials such as asbestos and lead. Have a look at some of the childrens books and toys. Especially Heinrich the deer who taught us how the zoo was better than freedom. The talking strawberry informed kids about health. Yikes. Made it to the Brandenburg Gate - There are so many memorials dedicated to the fallen. After Mauer museum and Checkpoint Charlie last week - its all pretty heavy, actually. This place has been through so much in the past hundred years and has emerged as one of the most forward looking, progressive, and thriving places in Europe - but the scars are everywhere. To lighten the mood we then went to an outdoor Christmas faire. Yummy! Later, had dinner with our good friend Wolfram. Today were heading home via Moscow. See you all soon! #gentlemencallerseurope2014
