Silver Star The Silver Star, established by Act of Congress on 9 July 1918 and amended on 25 July 1963, is awarded to a person who, while serving in the United States Armed Forces, is cited for markedly distinct gallantry while in action against an enemy of the United States, while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing or foreign force, or while serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in an armed conflict against an opposing armed force in which the United States is not a belligerent party. Upon application, it is awarded to individuals who received a citation for gallantry in published orders issued by a headquarters commanded by a general officer in World War I.
