Since its such a grey day I thought itd be nice to brighten things up with a little bit of tropical wildlife. This follows on nicely from this weeks talk by Andy Whitworth on the value of regenerating rainforest. He told us about the work he is doing in Peru, where he has found that under a best-case scenario, regenerating forest can hold ~80% of the vertebrate species found in primary forest, expanding our opportunities for biodiversity conservation. This photo was taken by by Lucie Provaznikova last year. She says: Its a picture of fork-tailed woodnymph (Thalurania furcata) - hummingbird. It was taken during Glasgow University Peru Expedition 2013 (supported by a Blodwen Lloyd - Binns grant) in summer 2013 in Manu region. We were using mist nets one morning and managed to find this wee guy tangled in the net. It belongs to the Trochilidae family and is found in lowland rainforests. Cornell Lab of Ornithology: Neotropical Birds Online adds These solitary hummingbirds spend their time in humid forests, tall second growth, shaded plantations, or in gardens. They usually forage at low flowers, especially from plants in the Rubiaceae genus. While males sometimes defend patches of flowers and act aggressively, females tend to be less territorial and either trapline or steal nectar from the floral territories of other hummingbirds.
