Since the first time I forgot to copy all of this here it is again! For those interested (since the Music Department statement has been blocked), the Clarion University Music Department statement reads as follows: Along with the Departments of Art and Theater, the Department of Music and the Marwick-Boyd Fine Arts Center serves as the cultural center for the region. Since it’s inception, the Department of Music has celebrated the joy that music brings to listeners and practitioners alike by presenting thousands of concerts, recitals, masterclasses and performances by its students and faculty, and countless community members, free of charge to the Clarion community. However, the music soon will be silenced if Clarion University President, Dr. Karen Whitney, has her way. Dr. Whitney proposes in her “Workforce Plan” the elimination of Clarion’s long-standing Music Education program, and 6 Music faculty positions, effectively eliminating the Department of Music altogether. The Music faculty vehemently disagree with the proposed plan, and believe the Music Education degree, Music students and their work both on-stage and off, and the musical opportunities created by and made available to ALL members of the Clarion community through the Department of Music are extremely valuable, and should be not only be retained, but fostered and nurtured, for the benefit of everyone now and in the future. Though significant and irreparable damage already has been done, the Music faculty will work diligently to see that this plan never is implemented. But we need your help. Share your thoughts on the plan, your experiences with the Department of Music or its faculty, or the importance of music in general with the Clarion University Board of Trustees, CUP President Dr. Karen Whitney, Provost Dr. Ronald Nowacyzk, and Interim Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences Dr. James Foster.
