Since the historic midterms this week - in which the American people told us in no uncertain terms NO MORE LEFT-WING HOGWASH!!! - the main topic of discussion in political forums seems to be Now, how should we work with the Democrats in the new Congress? Well, yesterday, one of my Congressional heroes passed away at the age of 84: the late, great Philip M. Crane... and Im reminded of a moment in Congress a long time ago - I think in the late 1970s, when the GOP was in a serious minority position. There was a housing bill of some kind - not a terrible one, not even a bad one - but still, a typical housing bill. The vote started at around 100 to 1. Yes, the one vote against was Phils. The votes continued to be tabulated in the House - you know how that goes, over about a half hour or so until everybodys voted. 150 to 1. 200 to 1. By around 300 or 350 to 1, people started nudging Phil. Come on, Phil, lets make this one unanimous. Its not a bad bill. Heck, as housing bills go, its a pretty good one. What do you have against it? Come on over and make it unanimous, will ya? Phil picked up his copy of the Constitution, and held it up for all to see. Im paraphrasing from memory - this is about 30 or 40 years ago - but Phil said something like this: I dont care if its a bad housing bill or a good housing bill. I dont even care if its a GREAT housing bill. All I know is, Ive read through this document a hundred times, and I dont see anywhere in this sacred document where it says we can have ANY kind of a housing bill! Now, for those of you who have never had the pleasure of truly being represented in Congress, let me tell you this: In my humble opinion, THAT is a Congressman. John F. Di Leo
