Sindh govt, UN launch development programme. For the socio-economic development of under-privileged people in Sindh, the provincial government and United Nations kicked off the One UN Programme on Monday. The second phase of the project focuses on addressing inclusive and equitable development needs of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged sections of population covering six strategic priority areas where the UN has comparative advantage to assist through its core mandate. The key activities and outcomes over the next five years range from ensuring access to and use of basic social services; sustainable livelihoods; disaster risk reduction; strengthening governance and social cohesion; gender equality and social justice; and food and nutrition security for vulnerable groups. All areas for the programme have been identified by the Sindh government and stakeholders as priorities for accelerating Millennium Development Goals achievement realising the development plans of the province. Arif Ahmed Khan, the Sindh additional chief secretary of Planning and Development Department, along with the UN representatives in Pakistan launched the programme. “I am confident with the help of the UN system and working together coherently and effectively, we will be better positioned to deliver on the promise the government made to provide social services, strengthen governance and social cohesion,” Khan said. “We look forward to work with the UN agencies delivering concrete results and monitoring impact through the Joint Steering Committee, which will oversee the collaboration.” Unicef’s Dan Rohrmann said: “This is a unique opportunity where the Sindh government and the UN agencies have come together for the first time to jointly launch an ambitious and dynamic five-year programme, which addresses key priorities defined together with a broad range of stakeholders in Sindh that, when implemented, will forever change the lives of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged.” He added that the UN was proud to build on its long history in Pakistan and to deliver development and humanitarian assistance in partnership that underscores the synergy and coherence of multiple agency interventions in the area of greatest need.
