Sir James Dyson: Theresa May risks ‘long-term economic decline’ over foreign students Sir James Dyson Inventor ridicules proposal to force top graduates to leave the country as a way to “export” talent to competitors for sake of an “electoral quick fix” Theresa May would be condemning Britain to “long-term economic decline” under plans to force overseas students to leave the country on graduation, Sir James Dyson, the inventor, has warned. Sir James, one of Britain’s most respected business leaders, accused the Home Secretary of risking the UK’s economic future for an electoral “quick fix”. He ridiculed proposals to force graduates from outside the EU to leave on completing their studies before reapplying for work visas, saying the idea would effectively turn the UK’s world class university education into an “export” rather than a magnet for investment. Sir James also said his own Wiltshire-based Dyson empire, which moved its assembly to Malaysia 13 years ago was “hedging its bets” by investing in research and development in the UK but maintaining engineering operations in Singapore. Mrs May is said to want a future Conservative government to work towards “zero net student migration” by ensuring that those on study visas leave quickly.
