Sisters and Brothers as Best Friends Growing up my best friend was my older sister. When we were young we slept in bunk beds and our nightly ritual was having puppets plays with our feet and hands. As we grew up she became my inspiration. She was successful in school – so I started to study harder. She became involved in Muslim youth work – so I got started also. She ran track and played volleyball – so I tried to be an athlete too! Unfortunately it took me a few years to catch up to her in sports! I was a rather chubby, had a clubfoot, and the crappy genes from my parents! ☺ But we were inseparable and she was my hero. My younger son and his sister also have a bond that is perhaps even stronger. It is midnight in Italy right now and we are waiting for our bus. What to do?! I spent the last few minutes looking at pictures on the computer trying to pass time. I have so many pictures of Ruqaya and Haytham playing together. In fact my computer is filled with them! They have always been close. Haytham has this amazing ability to play with his little sister – not for her - but actually with her. Sometimes she gets the short end of the stick in some of their ‘physical’ games - like when they play UFC ☹! But he is normally quite content just spending time playing with his little sister like they were best friends. It is lovely to watch. Haytham started high school this year. While there are many fears we parents have about our kids going to high school – one of mine is that his relationship with his sister will change. I adore watching them play. They have a most special bond between them. He shows an element of kindness to his sister –and that is something I would not want to see him loose as he grows up. One of the ways we can help our generation of young boys learn to be gentle and nurturing is by encouraging their involvement with children and especially their younger siblings who are girls. Haytham was always been a sensitive young man so this quality seems to come natural to him subhannallah. I pray that he never looses this inshallah. (Okay – 2 hours to go!)
