Sitting less than 10 feet from jurors, Routier rarely looked at - TopicsExpress

Sitting less than 10 feet from jurors, Routier rarely looked at them during her testimony. The six-man, six-woman jury will begin deciding Routiers fate after the prosecution and defense rebuttal testimony that begins today. Jurors showed no overt reaction to Routiers testimony, although the overflowing courtroom, with more than 150 spectators, erupted in laughter when Routier demanded to know why letters she wrote from jail were being used to contradict her on the witness stand. Can I ask you where youre getting all these letters, sir? she asked Shook. When informed they were obtained from her Kerr County jailers, she asked, Isnt that illegal? prompting the roar of laughter. No, it isnt, Shook replied. In several letters to family and friends, Routier said, I know who did it and described two men - a neighbor and another man - who had been suggested to her as possible suspects by a private detective. Prosecutors said neither man was connected to the crime. Routiers firm statements that the real killer was on the loose were used in cross-examination to challenge her equally firm claims that she didnt get a good look at her assailant and couldnt remember most of the attack.
