Sixth Best Movie Villain of 2014: Koba (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) The best science-fiction stories take outlandish or futuristic concepts and turn them into commentaries on our concerns and flaws as a human race. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is no different: playing best as a Shakespearean tragedy about the impossibility of peace when selfishness and jealousy seep into the mix. No one in the film represents that better than the Iago-esque right hand man of Caesar known as Koba. Unlike Caesar, who was raised by the benevolent James Franco and saw the potential for good in humanity, Koba only witnessed their sheer cruelty as he was experimented and tortured by them for many years before Caesar freed him in Rise of the Planet of the Apes. While he owes Caesar his life and initially sticks by him, he is inflexible in his vengeful beliefs against people and allows it to consume him: transforming him into a brutal, jealous snake in Caesars ape society. Like some of the greatest movie villains, Koba is a being that begins sympathetically but allows his own prejudices to warp him into something much more malicious . Particularly in the latter half do we see this possess him into tyrannical rages: betraying not only the humans and ape society, but everything that Caesar believed in and swore to avoid. In short, there are numerous reasons to see the amazing Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, but one of the most convincing arguments I can think of is Koba as one of the great Judas characters in recent years.
