Skin Conditions in Dogs During the spring and summer months we will see an increase in the amount of pets with skin conditions. These conditions can vary from a localised rash, ear infection, pustules, hair loss, redness of the skin and excessive scratching. There are several causes for dermatitis including: - Flea allergy dermatitis caused by an allergy to flea saliva, most often seen on the tail base - Contact allergy which is caused by contact with an item or plant that the dog is allergic to, most often seen on the tummy and paws - Food allergy, the symptoms for this one is can vary slightly, from a swelling of the lips, eyes and ears through to all over rash - Inhaled allergies are caused by pollens in the air that the pet inhales Affected dogs will often chew, lick and scratch all over, especially on the feet, tummy, tail base and face. Saliva will often stain light colored hairs resulting in orange or reddish brown hair. The dog may also scratch and rub around the eyes and ears, the axillae (armpits), the groin or the inside of the thighs. Diagnosis of each type of allergy is not easy. It is based on the presence of clinical signs and ruling out other causes of pruritus such as flea allergy dermatitis or food allergies. The clinical signs and itching caused by grass pollen are the same as those caused by house dust mites and many molds. In other words, your dog may be allergic to several different things with the result being the same: excessive itching and scratching. Treatment and management of seasonal dermatitis can vary depending on the type of allergy. If you feel your pet is suffering from an allergy dermatitis, please call for an appointment on 4334 2002.
