Sleeping maybe the key to our brains’ ability to adapt and change, according to a new theory. While awake, the brain constantly takes in new information, which strengthens and increases the number of neural connections. But all these changes take up a lot of energy and over time the system begins to breakdown, weakening signaling and interfering with our ability to learn and remember. In this theory, to return to homeostasis, or baseline of functioning, sleep puts our brains in an offline state, uninterrupted by external stimulus, that allows us consolidate new information while discarding less important connections. Have you ever felt like you were too tired to learn one more thing?
