Slovenia & Croatia Slovenia completely surprised us. We arrive with no preconceptions and left wondering why more people from home don’t visit this beautiful country. We crossed over into Slovenia and drove along the Soca Valley to Lake Bled. The turquoise water of the Soca Valley looks artificial! It’s ridiculously blue. The rolling hills are green making the landscape lovely. I had another go at fishing and once again failed… will I ever catch dinner on this trip? Lake Bled is stunning, we spent three days there and didn’t get bored of the fairy tale setting with a castle on a cliff and a church on a small island in the middle of the lake. It must be an amazing place to visit in summer when you can swim in the warm waters of the lake. We also visited Slovenia’s small but perfectly formed capital, Ljubljana. There aren’t really any must see sights but that’s part of its charm. The centre of the old town is closed to motorised vehicles and isn’t too busy. It conveys a very calming atmosphere. We just wandered around before having lunch right on the river. It was lovely to pay reasonable prices for everything and mend some of the holes in our pockets after Italy! From LjubLjana we drove to Zagreb in Croatia to pick Emma up for a short Croatian adventure. We started in Plitvice Lakes National Park. A nicely run park with recommended routes and a ferry across one of the large lakes. We had sublime weather and enjoyed a long day out walking on the boardwalks and peering into the crystal clear water. There are some very impressive waterfalls too! From here we spent a few days heading south and wild camping in a lovely spot next to a river with only two very angry geese for company. Hvar islands was the next stop and after a slightly choppy ferry ride we arrived. We spent the next few nights on Hvar Island and visited the town of the same name. It’s a lovely town with beautiful buildings and a quaint little harbour. Bureks were a lovely treat for lunch as we looked over the sea from the castle. Dubrovnik was next on the agenda and after a brief spell on Bosnian territory we arrived and settled in a campsite. We spent the following day wandering round the lovely town walls looking in at the terracotta roofs and out at the azure waters of Croatia’s Adriatic Sea. After taking in the lovely surroundings we decided to take in some of the beer too… It was a shame we couldn’t spend longer in Croatia but we both agree that it is somewhere to return to!
