Slowdown in campus placements as IT companies minimize offers Campus recruitments in colleges all over Karnataka have witnessed a slowdown in 2014, due to several Information Technology (IT) companies minimizing placement offers this year. Multinational company Infosys, which hired 306 candidates from Dayanand Sagar College of Engineering two years back, has hired 166 this year. HCL is expected to skip campus recruitments. HCL hired more than 300 candidates last year. iGate is the only major recruiter this year and has hired 61 candidates. It is the mass recruiters who have reduced offering placements. This year around 75% of placements have been completed till date as against 80% at the same time last year, as per officials of PES Institute of Technology (PESIT). Placement officials of various colleges have claimed that various firms, especially the IT ones, have adopted a more selective approach this year in terms of recruitment, even from the premier colleges. Inspite of the current scenario, top colleges are able to place all their students as there are more companies visiting the campuses this year. Startup companies have also visited many colleges. However, the core companies have not extended many offers. Construction and automotive firms are expected to make lucrative offers to students in the coming days. As per placement officials of various institutes, top IT firms have hired few Master of Business Administration (MBA) graduates whereas the new companies have extended attractive job offers. Internship offers have dipped as well. The added batch size in few institutes has contributed to this phenomenon. Additionally, more students are vying for the same job. Another emerging trend is that market research and manufacturing companies are hiring more MBAs than IT firms. The compensation packages offered to management and engineering candidates remain the same this year. Manufacturing firms tend to hire MBA graduates from engineering backgrounds. The average salary offered to new MBAs is Rs 6 lakh to Rs 7.5 lakh. The top salary offered to an MBA graduate is Rs 16.5 lakh, while that offered to an engineering candidate is Rs 16 lakh. In R V College of Engineering (RVCE), 7 students from the 2013-14 batch were offered Rs 14 lakh plus salaries and 36 students were offered Rs 10 lakh plus. Moreover, 147 students of the college have received Rs 5.5 lakh plus salary offers. A total of five students from the T.A. Pai Management Institute (TAPMI) have received international placement offers from Etihad Airways this year. As per institute officials, the highest average salary package offered by Etihad is Rs. 47.09 lakh.
