Sneak preview of the umpire book with this excerpt... “Call - TopicsExpress

Sneak preview of the umpire book with this excerpt... “Call it both ways!” is one of the dumbest things any fan or coach can yell at an umpire. Here’s why: break it down to what is really being said. At its core, that expression is an accusation that the umpire is purposefully calling the game in a manner that deliberately favors one team over the other, like they bribed him to call it their way. In other words, he’s being accused of cheating. Now that may not be what the person who said it intended, but that’s really what it is. And it’s a pretty heavy charge. Accusing an umpire of cheating is big time ballsy. Whoever says it better have concrete proof “the fix is on,” especially if it’s a coach, or he might just find himself asking his assistant coach later how the game turned out because he won’t be around to see it himself. A couple of times I’ve been in positions to ask the coach exactly he meant by that, and each time it was met with a stammer as he tried to talk his way out of it. Once a coach realizes what he has really said, the conversation changes dramatically, and it usually ends right there.
