Snow and ice threat for Tuesday night & Wednesday for parts of the region. While Mondays snow is a bigger story in the short term, Tuesday night into Wednesday offer a significant threat for snow and ice for parts of the region. Low pressure will track into the Ohio Valley and transfer its energy to a secondary low in the Atlantic. This will help trap low level cold air in across the Piedmont northwest of Philadelphia while warmer air aloft from the decaying primary low moves over the top of the surface. The result? Ice, ice, baby. Snow changes to sleet and freezing rain across the north and west suburbs overnight, with a period of icy rain glazing these areas if this setup holds serve. For the city, an initial shot of snow and freezing rain should nudge over to all rain as temperatures nudge above freezing by a few degrees. That rain/ice line nudges northwest into the suburbs...its exact placement TBD. Farther north (Poconos), this looks like all snow for you guys...and you might be in line for 6 or more of snow. We will map out our thoughts on this on Monday night. Given tomorrows snow is a bigger threat right now, our attention is driven more to that than the Wednesday storm but were keeping a half an eye on this one as well. Model imagery is from the RGEM (Canadian) model -- mostly for precip type output depiction (easier to show ice threat).
