So, Aaron Sorkin’s The Newsroom has ended. Lots of us are saddened by it. It wasn’t always the best of series for Aaron. His early season attempts at “comedy” sometimes came off as just that, as opposed to the inherent wit and humor in his work on, well… pretty much every TV series he’s done, including this one. Some of his writing, in terms of character development, was corny, but it has occurred to me that this very “flaw” has always been present in his work and has served him (and us) well in endearing his characters to us… along with some historically spectacular casting. So while we’re sad to see this show go, because, regardless of whats written above, it was stunningly smart, skilled, and entertaining, we can only trust he’ll have another one ready to roll as soon as possible. He’s, I think, 9 years younger than me, so I have the same kind of hope that I have with my physician, who is also younger than me. The trust is that as I get into my dotage (in the foothills at present), my Doc will still be there for me as I increase (according to the actuarial tables) my potential need for him, just as the geezerhipster (see me on twitter with that tag) in me will hope that I’ll be able to lounge in bed, or sit in my easy chair and, between unplanned naps, cackle at the AMAZINGLY CLEVER writing that youngster Sorkin produces - for many years to come. The last, wrap up episode, seemed to carry a little less gravitas and focus than the episode that preceded it, but that’s OK. Most Super Bowls tend to be step children to an epic playoff game leading up to it. But it was nice to see one more hour, regardless. Thanks to Sorkin and HBO. Looking so forward to the next one. Please hurry, I’m getting dummer by the day without you, pal.
