So, I ate a mushroom out of my yard, like I have numerous times, except this time, the shroom happened to be the very poisonous Amanita variety. This was Sunday afternoon. Lori and I went to Red Lobster later and enjoyed an early supper. Went to church at 5 and by 5:30, I was having dry heaves... From there it got progressively worse. I wound up on the floor of the bathroom with my body trying to get rid of the toxins. I thought it was simply food poisoning. Around midnight, when it wasnt getting any better, Lori called EMS and I was transported to Florida Hospital, Heartland. One of the Techs asked the right question: Have you eaten anything unusual today? Then I remembered the mushroom. The doctors contacted Poison Control, and based on my description, came up with the variety. I confirmed it when they showed me a picture of it. This particular shroom doesnt have any studies done, only anecdotal treatments, so the doctors prescribed everything that had worked in the past. One of the worst was I had to take Activated Charcoal every 4 hours for a period of time... Its kinda like drinking medicated mud, only not as appetizing. Fluids, fluids, fluids... and lots of things I wont go into as they are too gross... My kidneys were attacked first, then my liver, just as the Amanitas are prone to do. I was in ICU for 4.5 days, then spent the last 1.5 days in the medical/surgical wing. I told Lori not to put it out there, so that I could concentrate on getting well... Between your prayers, and the outstanding staff at FHH, I escaped with my life... God is good!
