So I just watched this video. I think the black man speaking is very well versed, confident, and assertive without being too overbearing or aggravational. Reading a comment on Scotts post got me thinking, and I believe Ive finally figured out how to verbalize my viewpoint on the racial tension between police officers and minorities. The comment in question begins: [He doesnt make a good point,] that kid and every one else out there are a bunch of stupid bigots labeling every cop as if they are a racist piece of shit. The truth of the matter is there *are* a lot of people in the crowd, and around the country, who do just that: label every cop they see as a worthless human being. However, I dont think generalizing makes them stupid. After all, the original commenter would essentially be admitting his own stupidity, as he generalizes the people in the crowd in the same way the people in the crowd generalize cops in the same way cops generalize minorities. Its the *exact* same social phenomena, just with a different focal point. Heres the thing: the people out there? Theyre just people. They work at restaurants and banks and retail stores. The most pain theyre causing is a negative shopping experience or a missed deadline. The commenter? He got me a little miffed, but is probably a pretty okay dude. The police officers, though. They have guns. They have an entire judicial system which is understandably biased in their favor. Their job is to lay their life on the line to protect the people who work in restaurants and banks and retail stores from those who may want to harm them. However, theres documented evidence of that not happening. The protests are a direct result of a systematic abuse of power, culminating with the deaths of the innocent at the hands of those who are literally paid to protect them. The problem is that the people we give the guns and the judicial advantage to are just like you. Theyre just like me. Theyre just like the stupid bigots in the crowd. Only they have guns and a license to kill. Police officers should be expected to be greater than you or I. Police behaving as average people *should* be seen as a failure on both a personal level and a systematic level. Until the people we gift guns and power to are truly our finest, there will never be justice-- only fear and disappointment.
