So I learned recently that loss of high frequency hearing with age is generally due to the brain not actual damage and can be trained back. Years ago I discovered that I could not hear a test tone over 16k. So I decided to play with it tonight. I can hear 1/3 octave white noise centered all the way up to 20k. With a sine wave I discovered that I can hear it past 20k but just for a split second and my brain mutes it. If I make a subtle change like moving the frequency or my head I hear it again and then gone.
