So I learned yet another valuable lesson in the arcane art of chemical bath fossil prepparation. This one wasnt as bad as the last though. The shark fossil (giant tadpole, horseshoe crab-looking thing) is embedded in a matrix composed of a both calcium carbonate like most fossils but is infused with sparkly brown crystals of iron oxide. Currenty I am using a cocktail of sorts composed of 1.5oz (29.6ml) of muriatic acid to 5 gallons of water with 180g of calcium phosphate as a protective buffer. Works great for most stuff but not the iron oxide-rich specimens such as this. So I upped it a little bit this time.... works BETTER.. but wouldnt you know it I forgot to take out an earlier limestone-rich/silica specimen and it was literrally dissolved into shit. *sighs* So now I will tackle the learning curve/discipline of the obscure Waller method and will keep my damaged specimens handy for when I being practiing machine tool prep. I know I know... it sucks losing that beautiful specimen (seen in the last two images), but its a small price to pay for a skill many sheeple pay tens of thousands of Jewniversity dollars for to learn.
