So, I read something cool about the song The Devil Went Down to Georgia, and figured Id share it with yall. I usually dont do this, but that was one of my favorite songs, and it puts a whole new twist on it. Its a story of the wager of a soul against a fiddle made of gold. Obviously, the Devil loses... or does he? The devil plays a much superior (albeit shorter) piece than Johnny. When you take out the backup and simply listen to the solo, the Devil shows much more skill on the violin than does Johnny. Yet the Devil gives up the fiddle anyway. Why? Because he didnt need the fiddle. Hes already got Johnnys soul-- he brought out the greed and pride in Johnny, and made him reveal himself for the sinful man that he is. The golden fiddle? Its the physical proof of the fact that the Devil owns Johnnys soul. All the devil has to do is wait.... and Johnny, in his moment of victory and ego, wont realize what hes done until its too late. But perhaps theres more. Perhaps the Devil never intended to win the contest at all. In most Christian theologies, the Devil doesnt have power over humanity-- he cant take souls, the souls have to be given. Similarly, there is no contract with the Devil that Jesus/God cant invalidate if the person falls on their knees and begs Gods forgiveness. If Johnny had lost the contest, he certainly would have done just that, and he would have received Gods forgiveness. By throwing the contest, the Devil has ensured that Johnny will be consumed by his own pride, while if he had lost, he would have recognized the error of his ways. And yet theres more. Johnnys story is repeated, presumably by himself and then later to others, as an example that with enough skill and determination, the Devil can be beaten without the help of God. The Devil, therefore, has not just won the soul of Johnny, but turned him into an unknowing emissary. https://youtube/watch?v=K6RUg-NkjY4
