So, I saw Young Fathers play for the first time last night. I wanted to understand what all the hype is about. Heres my tuppence. I thought the lighting was great. Its the most essential part of making their show work. Their hyper theatrical performance has choreographed movement pieces creating an aura of intrigue, reinforced by the fact there is no talking between songs. This creates an illusion of untouchable superstardom that keeps the audience at a manageable distance from the performers. As a Hiphop artist I will always find it unacceptable that someone would change their crisp Edinburgh accent to be an Ice Cube impersonator. However, This the thing though, the pseudo American rap accents almost become immaterial once you see them on stage. The backing track is so loud that any rapping is sitting just underneath audible. Its a deliberate ploy as they have their own sound engineer, who is a total prick but unquestionably good at his job. To draw a comparison He also does sound for Stanley Odd and makes Solareye sound great. Their show is so stylised you cant help but admire the stage craft. Im not convinced it is entirely a live show though, there lots of miming of vocals but they have some pretty cool props, an old synth station and someone standing next to some drums. Its visually encapsulating to watch. The production is certainly out there, like a cross between drum and bass, trap and a bad acid trip and one of the lads has a really beautiful singing voice too. Theyve created a sound that is new to a lot of Scottish ears and have continued to take massive forward strides in US with Anticon Records. Their EP won Scottish Album of The Year 2014 and their debut album is nominated for The Mercury Music Prize. Lots of people in Paisley seemed to enjoy their live show and I hope they continue to be successful.
