So I was asked the other day about a game, G-mod to be precise, and while I was describing the game play styles and and the cute little features and why I like it so much I was asked so what would you give it.. you know... out of 10? I drew a blank. and nice long blank of me rooting through my brain trying to work out why I couldnt perform this, the simplest of tasks. Then I worked it out. at the time I did what Ive noticed quite a few people do when asked the same of movies, or albums. say umm.. I dunno.. (enter approximate number of appreciation here in a questioning tone)? But Ive decided I dont like applying vague numeric values to a complex and detailed opinion. I know numeric ratings have their place for covers of movies and games to grab attention and as a quick simple way to gauge popular opinion, but in a detailed conversation Its about as helpful as asking detailed directions to the train station and being told what suburb it is in. Am I crazy here? I feel reviews and detailed descriptions are really what your after when you ask how is it? I fell like you want to know how is it!? and not me say 4.75675 out of 5, the social equivalent of saying good and staring at you creepily until you ask another question. You would never review art in this way. Ever. oh Mona Lisa? yeah. total babe 10/10. Monet? he is alright. 4/5 stars. THAT WOULD BE BULLSHIT. and face it. games, movies and music have evolved past simple aesthetic value. they are art, and if you disagree then I personally believe you dont truly understand or appreciate the medium. Apologies for rant. just something that has been annoying me lately...
