So... If we really arent the only planet with sentient life in the universe, why hasnt anybody found any signs of life elsewhere, yet? Of the estimated 3,500 Earth-like planets (numbers accurate as of Nov. 4, 2013) discovered so far (the bulk by the Kepler probe), a mere 600 are the same size as us, and of those, 104 reside in the habitable zone of their respective stars, and from those 104, there hasnt even been a whisper of any sentient activity. No Dyson Spheres, no radio transmissions, no robotic probes, nothing. Just us, and the apparent mathematical impossibility of physically project and propel solid matter faster than light, meaning visits to and from beyond are about as likely as piranha attacks off the coast of Norway, yet many governments and space agencies world wide continue to throw money at these projects, and I fail to understand why, other than a meagre ray of maybe to at least find a potential colony world for us to settle in the future, if we ever manage to make the trip there. And assuming we do, communication between planets would take tens of thousands of years or more due to sheer distance. Granted, our understanding of the Universe at large is still in relative nascence, but I think the trend is clear: we are alone and time will not change that.
