So, Im starting the week after a wonderful time in Paris with a wonderful friend. I was fascinated to watch the Parisians - what they ate, how they spoke, what they did. We are so alike and so different here in NC, USA. Something that I have been thinking on all this past week is this: how often do we take the time to enjoy our friends? I mean, REALLY enjoy them? Like without checking our phones every 2 minutes, without interrupting them, without finishing their sentences, without making excuses not to hang out? I was so struck at how well Parisians seem connected to one another. They talk - face to face, IRL even - and listen. They linger over tea or wine. They hug and kiss. They show support. And guess what? they have less GI disease (I checked)...they go to their doctors less for GI distress (I checked)...they have less chronic disease (checked)...and, as a people, are far, far leaner. Though there are a myriad of reasons for this, I cant help but think of that Beatles song where we get by with a little help from our friends. Connection is central to our health. Call that friend today that youve been missing. Ask them to go to Paris with you ;)
