So. Ive struggled a bit with it. Wanted to process. Just wanted to be sure I felt like I felt. But after going to TEDxJackson my thoughts are this... Great idea. Good look for the city. I get it. TedTalks are a big deal. Marshall Ramsey was perfect as host. Kermit was awesome. There were a few ideas with some meat. But I didnt hear any until 3pm. At least not where JACKSON was concerned. The event WASNT diverse. Despite what folks will tell you. When you have 300+ folks in and out of an event and maybe 20+ Black folks...in an 80% Black city?? And the Black folks that WERE there are the SAME Black folk I see at every event like that. And Im still talking to folks today who had NO idea something like that was happening. Isnt the idea to spread the concepts arrrooound? $100 a ticket? That guarantees that some of the folks who could use the info and inspiration wont get it right? Will there be chances for JSU or Tougaloo to be involved? Will there be more diversity in the speakers? Abstract concepts are cool but wheres the beef? Is it supposed to be feel good or productive? Dont wanna be THAT guy but... I wonder...are things getting done around here just to look cool and just for the white folks in the know to take advantage of? Or are we gonna start organizing the cool stuff and remember that were in an 80% African American city with challenges that a TEDtalk could address?? *shrugs*. I feel like were losing the info game around here. Thats all....
