So, Richie Sambora at O2 ABC Glasgow last night..... For some reason lots of folks have asked me what I thought... Not one to normally do this, I thought it might be an interesting exercise in Does my opinion really matter... So, here goes: First, if youre expecting the slick production, choreographed show that makes a Bon Jovi gig, then dont bother reading. Its nothing like that. Its a bit rough round the edges, a few dropped notes here and there, a bit self indulgent at times......... But thats Rock n Roll! Richie Sambora has assembled a kick-ass band, and he is a proper band leader. This is a jam band. They take their cues from him. The songs start to follow the studio arrangements, and at times veer off into extended jamming, with orianthi getting as much of the spotlight as Richie does. It looks like a guy who has rediscovered his love of playing guitar again, and he wants to just get up and play. Thats what were there for. We want to see him play the guitar. Hes an awesome player, and has been under-rated for so long. The set list could have been better; Only The Answer and Stranger In This Town from the first album, 7 songs from the new album, 4 BJ songs, some interesting covers, but nothing at all from the second solo album, arguably the best one, and the album Bon Jovi should have made after Keep The Faith..... The BJ songs; Ill Be There For You, Lay Your Hands, Wanted, These days, actually all sounded better with Richie singing them. They had more life, more depth, more feel, but then his voice has always been richer, stronger and better than Jons. Has he conquered all his demons? I dont know... Does it really matter?? It was a good night, the sold out crowd loved it, they sang along to every song, they clapped, they cheered, they put their hands in the air, they smiled........ Thats a rock n roll audience..... He looked genuinely humbled by the response, and if he needs that at this point in his life, then all the better. Is he sincere, well, considering what I witnessed back stage, it proved to me that its sincere, genuine, and he actually cares about his fans. Always a winner in my book. I had a great night, I was fan boy again (But Ive always been a fan), and I left with a smile on my face. But like I said, does my opinion really matter????
