So a story from the Championship Tournament this May in Spain: On the first morning of fighting, the very first event was the polearm singles tournament. A BBC film crew had accompanied the Brits and was interviewing several of the polearm fighters, prior to the tournament. I was helping Jeff Galli into his armor when they came around the American camp, and had a conversation with him. Quite understandably, they wanted to use the segments to build anticipation and drama between the fighters, and they gently tried to coax Jeff into talking a mild bit of trash. He was incapable of doing it. They asked him to at least say he was there to win, and after a cartoonish moment of grappling with his genial nature, he grinned and apologized. He wasnt there to win, as he said, Winning doesnt matter, its the honor of the contest thats important to me. The sentiment looks much loftier in print than it does in a stereotypical laid-back No-Cal drawl, but it was perfect. I excused myself and ducked away so as not to spoil their shot with the chuckle that was about to escape at Jeffs earnest failure to trash talk, and started flagging down my passing teammates. You have to see this, I said through a laugh, The BBC guys are trying to get Jeff to talk trash, its amazing. He then proceeded to walk out and decimate the field. There was no round which he didnt comfortably win en route to the tourneys first gold medal, though in typical humility he might say otherwise. This is the guy who in now undergoing a surgery on his neck, so anyone with an eye for medieval bits and pieces, have a look through the auction to help him cover the costs. https://facebook/groups/344654142353574/
