So after seeing multiple articles about NCAA athletes wanting to unionize and rampant academic scandal at D-1 programs (which should get the DEATH penalty for their $ generating sports only in my opinion), here is my recommendation on how to change Athletics/Higher Ed... 1) List Head Coaches as tenured Faculty the same way many 1-AA, D-2 and D-3 schools do! 2) Take the extra money you would have used to pay the coach and put it into renovating/upgrading academic and LIFE SKILLS services for Student-Athletes! Assign at least 1-2 Academic Coordinators to each revenue-generating sport, and designate other ACs in a grouping with the remaining athletic programs. 3) Any additional money would then be used to fund both merit and needs based scholarships for student-athletes; including a SMALL stipend each semester for living expenses (if needed). 4) Edit/Re-define the NCAA compliance rulebook to comply with modern needs and opportunities. These changes allow the NCAA to foster both a competitive environment on the court and in the classroom, while maintaining both academic and administrative integrity. This also provides student-athletes with GREATLY NEEDED life-skills lessons and training, and includes financial responsibility and fiscal management training with the inclusion of a living stipend. This would also act as a pre-training for those who go on the the Pro level and could allow them to better manage their money in the future. And finally, it also allows for non-revenue generating sports to also continue because money isnt being drained to excessively pay coaches or student-athletes.
