So, after several years of pestering from my lovely wife and, more recently, a couple of doctors, I succumbed to my first colonoscopy. It was not as much fun as Id heard it would be. Several hours of preparatory cleansing produced some considerable annoyance as well as an unusually sore egress. Turns out that the cleanser is highly acidic. A bonus, apparently, in case one found the joy of its primary effect wanting. The following morning we (Gwen and I) checked me into the OR where a group of total strangers did unspeakable things to me. Fortunately I was unconscious for almost all of it. Upshot is, the doc found seven (count em, SEVEN) polyps in my poop chute, at least three of them pre-cancerous. Turns out, I may be alive ten years from now because of a loving (and sometimes pestering) wife and the grudging willingness to endure 48 hours of discomfort and embarrassment. If youre over 50 and love the ones who love you, take the plunge (no pun intended). Could buy you some extra time walking upright.
