So, apparently we are all living in a William Gibson novel. A hacker gang (yes, gang) called The Lizard Squad has taken down Sonys Playstation Network and XBOX Live today after threatening to do so a week ago. These guys have been frequently and seemingly randomly targeting video game culture and industry with attacks on Sony, Microsoft, various smaller companies, game servers, specific games, and individual gamers. They have an international fandom in the hundreds of thousands. There are numerous fascinating rumors surrounding Lizard Squad: - They do it for the Lulz. - They may be professional DDoS-for-hire mercenaries. - They may be or are connected to The Guardians Of Peace, the group that hacked Sony and leaked all their shit. - They may have started the rumor that North Korea was behind the Sony hack. - Lizard Squad grounded a plane that happened to be carrying a top Sony executive. - A rival hacker gang called The Finest Squad has declared war on Lizard Squad and swore to prevent their attack on PSN, unsuccessfully obviously. - Everyones favorite hacker vigilantes, Anonymous, has released a video admonishing Lizard Squad and vowing to stop them, even going so far as to say they will assist the FBI in hunting them down. - Anonymous members may be secretly amused by Lizard Squads antics. I find the idea that an invisible gang war rages in the datasphere on Christmas day to be kind of scary and awesome. It almost makes up for the fact that I cant use my brand new PS4. Jerks.
