So evidently theres some kind of huge cigarette boat race today (craps given: zero) but I went for a walk along the beach and there are literally hundreds, possibly thousands of boats ranging from little open fishing boats to huge Arab prince yachts, stretching for miles up and down the whole of lido key. Most of them are in a line a mile or so out from the beach, and theres thousands of people jamming the beach itself with tents and grills and stuff. About ten minutes ago there was a sound like the world coming to the end as thirty or so cigarette boats opened up their engines all at once, and theyre tearing along between the beach and the line of spectator boats. Theres also at least a half dozen helicopters pacing the cigarette boats for espn and the other news services. I dont know what I wandered into, but its kinda fun watching it from my balcony.
